iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 Delayed Release Date Upsetting Investors and Consumers?

17 May, 2013

Investors and consumers feel frustrated with the delayed announcement of the next iPads couple with the low supply of the previous models of the tablet. Some resellers reported that they are already out-of-stock of iPad 4 and iPad Mini. Consumers are expecting of the imminent release of their successors. However, Apple hinted that Apple devices will be launched later this year until early next year.

Giant retailer Walmart now offers current iPad models with up to $30 less and hints the imminent release of iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.

According to Stabley Times, Walmart offered discounts on the device and is currently running out of stock of various iPad configurations. The combination of slashing prices on a popular product while simultaneously running out of that product is proof saying that a new version will come soon.

Make a macro lens for your iPhone

16 May, 2013

If you’re out and about a lot and find yourself taking lots of pictures with your iPhone, you might find a DIY macro lens very handy indeed. A macro lens allows you to take close-up, detailed shots of small objects. So a macro lens on your iPhone is perfect for capturing the detail of everyday life.

You can buy macro lenses, but it’s easy to make your own for your iPhone, iPad or any camera phone. It’s not hard and you’ll have the satisfaction of having made one yourself.

You’ll need:

  • cling film
  • Sugru (available from the Sugru website)
  • old broken lens (or small magnifying glass)
  • baking paper
  • scissors

Step 1

Gather your supplies.

Step 2

Begin by covering the camera lens and corner of your phone with the cling film.

Step 3

Pull apart the lens or magnifying glass and isolate the glass.

Step 4

Clean the lens and set aside for later.

Step 5

Cut your Sugru from the packet.

Step 6

Using about half of a small packet of sugru, roll a couple of “spaghetti” strings. This is likely to stain, so roll on the baking paper and protect your surface area.

Step 7

Lay your lens onto your string of Sugru and roll the lens along the string to enclose it.

Step 8

Use your scissors to cut the excess Sugru. You should now have a lens enclosed in Sugru.

Step 9

Now position your magnifier over the camera lens. Gently press the Sugru to ensure a tight fit around the glass and optimum positioning.

Step 10

Turn your phone over and attach another spaghetti strand as pictured in the below images.

Step 11

Roll the remaining sugru into a ball and press flat. Fill in the corner. Double check your lens position and fit of the lens corner onto the phone.

Step 12

Once you are happy with the fit of the lens corner, remove the cling film and the lens from your phone and leave to cure for 24 hours.

Step 13

After 24 hours, remove the cling film from the inside of your lens corner.

Step 14

Clean lens to remove oily residue from the Sugru.

Step 15

Fit to phone. You’re done! You’ve got all you need to let the detail of life shine.

iPad 5 Release Autumn or Spring?

15 May, 2013

iPad 5 Release Autumn or Spring?

So it seems that observers are divided on whether we'll see the new iPad in spring or autumn, with pundits dashing around and lining up like a game of Runaround. On 22 February, analyst firm TrendForce opted for the autumn launch line, claiming that we'll see a completely overhauled iPad 5 in September 2013.

Just to throw an extra release date into the mix, accessory manufacturer MiniSuit reckons the new iPad will be released in June. Gizmorati also reckons the iPad 5 will be shown off in June - specifically on June 29, six years to the day from the launch of the original iPhone. Citing an "inside source from Apple", Gizmorati claimed on 19 March that an event, called 'Original Passion, New Ideas', will see the launch not just of the new iPad but also of the iPhone 5S. However, given that June 29 is a Saturday, we're filing this particular rumor in the 'Probably Total BS' file.

So in summary, the iPad 5 will be released in either March (wrong!), April (wrong again!), June, September or October. Surely there are sources out there willing to bet on May and July?

The early release dates mentioned above could have slipped due to a shortage of touch sensors for the iPad mini (the same sensors that are expected to be used in the next iPad) if you believe a Digitimes report of 7 March. Japanese firm Nishha - Apple's main supplier of the sensors - was reportedly boosting its output to meet demand but Digitime's sources reckoned the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 could still be fighting over this component when they go into production, causing one of them to be delayed.

However, there was a vague sign that a new iPad was waiting in the wings. When retailers start to cut prices that's sometimes because they're clearing out stock to make way for a newer model, and as Cult of Mac notes, in the US that's just what Wal-Mart, Best Buy and MacMall all did on Wednesday 3 April, reducing prices of the iPad 3 and iPad mini prices by about 30%. So were the April release date rumours correct after all? Er, no.

Back to rumour-magnet Digitimes. The Taiwanese site now reckons, as per a report of 9 April 2013, that iPad 5 production will not begin until the "July-August" period of this year, which will no doubt please those analysts who are predicting an autumn release.

iPad 5 Estimated to Be 15% Thinner, 25% Lighter Than Current iPad

Kuo expects mass production and shipments of the new iPad to ramp up in the August-September timeframe, with the device registering roughly 15% thinner and 25% lighter than the current full-size iPad.

iPhone 6 to take over Android

29 April, 2013

Today we’re looking at smartphone ownership and a new study that suggests the iPhone 6 will assist towards an Android takeover. Although lately Android has been the dominant smartphone platform a new survey of smartphone owners in the US indicates that in just a few short years more people will own an iOS iPhone than an Android phone.

This seems to be mainly because iPhone owners have a strong loyalty to Apple’s iOS platform. A survey of 16,000 people in the US conducted by Yankee Group over the last year asked about the smartphones they were using now and phones they intended to purchase. Approximately half of the survey participants currently own an Android phone while around 30% own an iPhone. However, of those who said that they would be purchasing a new smartphone over the next six months, 42% said they would be choosing an Android device while 42% said they would be buying an iPhone.

The current iPhone owners who said they would be opting for another iPhone totaled 91% showing a huge amount of brand loyalty. Only 6% said they would be switching to an Android device. Compare that with current Android phone owners where although 76% said they would be buying another Android device, 24% said they would be switching platforms and 18% of those said they would be purchasing an iPhone.

If the current trend continues then the forecast is that the amount of iPhone owners in the US will overtake Android phone owners within the next few years. Check out the chart image above to see smartphone platform projection figures. Yankee Group VP Carl Howe therefore feeles that Android has peaked while market share of the iPhone will continue to grow.

Early iPhone 6 Rumours

20 March, 2013

Apple's next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, will have a 'killer feature' to trump Samsung's new Galaxy S4 smartphone, an analyst has said.During an interview with CNBC on Monday, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty said that she expects the next-generation iPhone to spark a big comeback for Apple."I do believe that AAPL is approaching a bottom," she said, referring to Apple's struggling share price. "As you have heard, they are talking about returning more cash, and we think they will do that in the coming weeks. But people don't own AAPL for that. They own AAPL for innovation.""You saw Samsung Galaxy S4 come out last week, that shows you the innovation cards are up for grabs," Huberty continued. "What is lacking in that product [the S4] is a killer feature. We think that's where Apple will surprise this year.""This [iPhone] 5S cycle this year will be about a killer feature that drives consumers increasingly to the platform, and that increases the value of those 500 million [iOS] accounts," she added.

Apple & Matt Groening

15 March, 2013

Before Matt Groening invented The Simpsons he worked for Apple.

Well, sort of.

The famed animator designed an illustrated brochure for the tech giant back in 1989. You might find its contents to be eerily familiar.

The brochure was called Who Needs a Computer Anyway and contained animations similar to those of a comic he had written called Life in Hell.

He also designed a a brochure titled Networking in Hell, probably in the hopes of targeting the ironic hipsters of the time.

The poster read: "Looking for advanced communications between your Macintosh and that 'Big Blue' mainframe? Then bring your floppies down to Akbar 'n' Jeff’s Communications Hut."

Groening did a lot of work for Apple it seems. Another poster he designed contained an animation of a college dorm and a tag line that read: "Macintosh. Part of every students wildest dreams." It was sold alongside the brochure he had designed in college bookstores. You could even buy T-shirts with the animation printed on it.

iPad 5 case leak points to new shape

15 March, 2013

With the iPad 5 almost definitely going to be released this year, the rumours now are all around the look and specification of Apple's new tablet.

One of the consistent themes has been that the iPad Mini will provide the inspiration for the iPad 5. It makes a lot of sense, as the existing iPad design has been around since the iPad 2 and stuck for the most recent model, the iPad 4, and isn't quite as fresh-looking as the newer smaller tablet.

While we've only seen rumours and some mock-ups suggesting the new design route, people have recently been getting more excited as new case mock-ups have been spotted that seem to confirm the new style.

Case manufacturers often get case specs early on, so that they can start the manufacturing process and be ready when the new tablet is launched. While this can be a bit of a gamble, designing a case without seeing the product, the companies that get it right have an early head-start and can make a killing from the first sales.

iPad 5 in June

25 February, 2013

iPad 5 Cases Emerging and Signal iPad 5 in June.

These iPad 5 cases are slimmer than the fourth-generation iPad case, which supports rumors that the next iPad will share design similarities with the iPad mini, most notably featuring smaller side bezels. The back of the case depicts an extra hole, which is for the microphone. The current fourth-generation iPad's microphone is located at the top of the device, but Apple has relocated the microphone to the back of the iPad 5, as noted in leaked photos of the rear shell of the device. In addition to slimmer bezels and a smaller size, the iPad 5 is said to be significantly thinner than the iPad 4, featuring the chamfered edges of the iPad mini, which is apparent in the less angled design of the iPad 5 case. We recently posted a mockup of what the fifth-generation iPad might look like, based on the current rumors and the leaked rear shell. An iPad 5 with a reduced size would likely necessitate a redesign of the interior of the tablet as well, incorporating smaller chip components and a thinner display panel.Several different release dates for the fifth-generation iPad have been suggested, ranging from March to mid-year to October, with most rumors settling on a fall release. Rumours have it Apple's iPad 5 will be released in June.
